Toyota Repair: rack and pinion
Questioni am working on a 2006 toyota corrolla ce auto trans i am replacing the rack and pinion and the information i have found is a bit confusing. i have the engine suspended the tie rod ends disconnected.plastic covers lh and rh removed.directions i have read say to remove the front exhaust pipe but it seems the engine pipe goes all the way to the back of the vehicle. in addition does the x-member get completely removed. if there is a breakdown showing the breakdown of each step possibly with diagrams it might make the procedure easier to follow. thanks for your help.
AnswerI would suggest that you drop the subframe with the steering unit attached, I think I have replaced some without doing that but it may be easier for you to try it that way. After disconnecting everything and removing the steering gear mounts, I was always able to twist and pull it out toward one side.
