Toyota Repair: toyota 5sfe engine problem, 5sfe engine, toyota camry
QuestionTed:I have a 1994 Toyota Camry LE station wagon,5sfe engine, 315k miles. Have weird engine problem.started out engine would interittently die at idle on its own or when I went to take off from idle. Usually would not restart unless it sat for 5-10 minutes. Then it might be just fine for a few days, then same problem.Tried several aftermarket coils, all bad. Tried 2 different remanufactured distributors, also bad. Finally went and bought Toyota OEM coil and put it in my distributor. When problem occurs I do have a pulse at the primary of the coil and also have a spark at the plugs.I have:replaced ECM with a different one, changed TPS,air intake sensor, MAP sensor, cleaned EGR valve, replaced IAC valve and throttle body.I have a gauge on the fuel rail, reads about 40 PSI all the time.I'm about at my whits end, love the car and it runs great going down the road. I notice that if I dont let the engine return to idle but keep rpms above 1000-1200 it wont die on me. The only thing left I can think of is that the junkyard ECM has the same weird problem wrong with it that my ECM does. Can you help? Thank you very much. Kenneth Hale
AnswerI doubt that the ECM you replaced has the same problem, the only hting I can think of is that there may be a wiring problem between the ecm and the engine or a bad ecm ground, check the ground wires at the ecm connectors, they are all brown/black, check these with an ohm meter to ground with the connectors off.
