Toyota Repair: temperature gauge dont work, toyota pickup truck, temperature gauge

i have a 1993 toyota pickup truck and temperature gauge dont work. what should i do. Do those trucks when running suppose to make a small tapping noise like the valves need adjusting or somethingn they say  thats how they sound i have a 22r

Locate the temperature sending unit on the intake manifold, see if the wire is connected, if it is disconnect the connector and ground it, with the key on, the gauge should go up, if it does replace the temp sending unit. The valve clearance should checked.
