Toyota Repair: 89 4runner hard start to much fuel?, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow
QuestionHi there, I have an abused 89 4runner... its my bush buggy. I just recently did the headgasket and all gaskets above along with new O-rings in the injectors etc. I got the truck home and it seemed to run fine. One day in January I noticed after the truck warmed up I wouldnt start for a bit, around 10 mins or so then it would. Then it got worse if I get in it and crank it, it turns over and gives one good sputter, If I dont catch that sputter and keep it alive using gas pedal, its gone for a few hours. and it will crank and crank all day long... with a very distinct smell of fuel. But if I do catch it and get it warmed up it idles a little ruff, almost like it wants to stall. Would I be heading down the right path if I was to start at the mass air flow sensor. I can pull a spark plug lead off and I am getting spark, even after ive missed it. The cap and rotor are new. leads are new, plugs are new. Im a little stumped with this one.. Is there a posibility of a poor or broken vacuum line? Or would you start with the MAF?
AnswerThere are a couple of possible problems, there may be an intake air leak, check the intake hoses, there may be a vacuum hose off or connected wrong, possibly an air flow meter problem, was this problem there before doing all that work? Is this a 4 or 6 cylinder?
