Toyota Repair: reading engine codes, diagnostic connector, scantool

Hi,
My girlfriend just got a '96 corolla.  How do I check the codes on this car and where can I find out what it means?
Is there a good link or two you could pass along?
The check engine light just came on and I'm hoping its just a O2 sensor.

The engine trouble codes should be retreived with a diagnostic scantool hooked up to the diagnostic connector, if there is an autoparts store near you contact them because a lot of them will use the scanner to get the code for you at no charge, try autozone, kragen etc.
