Toyota Repair: Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Removal Problem, crankshaft pulley, pulley bolt
QuestionHello,
I have a 94 Tercel with a 1.5l efi 3e-e engine. In late winter, the performance began to decrease steadily while the gas and oil comsumption increased. It doesn't leak any appreciable amount of oil. I checked the compression and 1,2 & 4 are good @ 200-210 psi. #3 is bad @ 30 psi and doesn't improve with a couple of tablespoons of oil poured in through the spark plug hole. It will produce a bluish smoke on startup and sometimes on downshift and heavy acceleration. Plugs usually look oil fouled. After an oil change it uses a little oil (1/2 pint) for 500-600 miles and then when the oil gets dirty it begins to use more until it gets up to almost a quart every 300-400 miles. When I pulled the valve cover the exhaust valve on #3 it had no lash; I would assume this one is burnt. I bought replacement valves for #3, head bolts, gasket set and timing belt.
I think that one or more valves in #3 are in need of replacement as well as all new valve seals; this, I hope, should significantly improve gas mileage (I've lost 20-25% during this decline) and reduce oil consumption. Does this sound reasonable to you? Also the crankshaft bolt is very difficult to remove; is it left or right hand thread? I broke the alternator belt when I wedged it with a screwdriver as well as bent some 8 mm bolts I used to secure a harmonic wheel balancer yoke to the pulley while bracing it against the frame with a big stilson wrench.
I would greatly appreciate your opinion and some helpful info on the bolt issue. I would like to thank you in advance for your help.
Regards,
George
AnswerI AGREE ON THE VALVES BEING BURNT AND REDOING THE VALVE SEALS.
AS FOR THE CRANK BOLT..... YOU NEED A CHAIN WRENCH AND A BREAKER BAR.
AND IT COMES OFF COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. HAVE A FRIEND HOLD THE CHAIN WRENCH ON THE CRANK PULLEY. AND TAKE THE BREAKER BAR WAND REMOVE THE BOLT
