Toyota Repair: Engine light, camry xle, exhaust smoke

I have a 93 Camry XLE V6 with 136,000 miles. A couple days ago the check engine light was on for a 30 minute drive and it wasn't after that.  Now my wife just called and had trouble starting it.  Check engine light was on with a symbol of a car with an exhaust/smoke symbol behind it.  She floored it and it started with a bit of rough running but now runs and idles smoothly.  What's going on?   Thanks.

I can relate to the check engine light but the other light with the car and the smoke I have never seen, this is totally new to me, do you live in the US or a foreign country?
I can't be of any further help until you have the car checked to see what the check engine diagnostic trouble code is.
