QuestionI had bad leaks of diesel at the two pivots for the "on/off" lever and the "throttle" on the top of the injector pump. I removed the top cover, replaced the "o" rings and reassembled the system (several times before I got the spring tension from the throttle lever correct).
Unfortunately, I now have a new, and no doubt related, problem -- the engine surges. I can gradually increase the engine speed with the tractor stationary and the engine sounds fine, that is it runs smoothly. However, if I speed it up suddenly, or try to put the tractor in motion, the engine begins to surge and retard (as if one were pressing and releasing an accelerator). I can put the tractor in motion by gradually increasing the throttle, but the moment I try to climb an incline it begins to surge.
I have checked and double checked for leaks, as I was told that this was a sign of air in the line. I have gradually eliminated all leaks, but the problem persists. Could I have messed up anything inside the injector? I only replaced the "o" rings and reattached those levers. The only other thing inside that chamber was a second small spring that was held in place by a nut. I did not do anything with that spring.
Or, what else might be the problem?
AnswerIt does sound like you have air in the system --- however you also could have leak that is accually drawing air into the fuel system -- with the unit running try spraying the areas where you were replacing parts -- the engine should change tone if you have a leak. Other wise the injection pump could have dirt or some other type of restriction .
