Triumph Repair: Compression Test, spitfire 1500, compression gauge
QuestionHi, I've got a 1980 Spitfire 1500 that's been sitting in my Mom's garage for 20+ years with limited use. I'm preparing to replace the clutch, but thought I'd do a compression test and valve adjustment. Here are my numbers, are these low enough to warrant additional work? Does the compression test need to be repeated after the valve adjustment?
1 2 3 4
----------------------
Dry 120 125 120 120
Wet 140 150 145 145
The wet test was done with three squirts from an oil can.
The car has 22,000 miles on it.
Thanks
AnswerHi Aaron,
It is always a good idea to run the test again after a valve adjustment. The numbers are a little low on the dry test but considering that it has been sitting for 20 years that may not be too bad and was the throttle wide open when doing the tests? It needs to be wide open.
If you get the same results, check your compression gauge against another and retest after a week or so driving. Could be some surface rust on the cylinder walls.
That is not enough concern to think about doing any engine repairs yet. If after a week or so driving it shows signs of blue smoke out the exhaust on acceleration you may want to think about rings.
