Triumph Repair: Seats for Spitfire, high density foam, mazda miata
QuestionMY seats in my 78 Spitfire were worn out. I didn't want to pay the money for new foam and covers (close to $1,000 ) so I installed Mazda Miata seat and found then too big for me. Are there any seats new or used that will fit better than the Miata. This is a week end toy and not a racer.
AnswerDan,
Sorry to say, there aren't a lot of alternatives to the stock seats as most automakers build seats these days to fit us in the "supersized" generation.
At one point Porsche 914 seats were listed as a possible alternative to the stock seats. Not that they'd be either a) cheap or b) easy to find.
Since you put in Miata seats I can tell you're not worried about authenticity. Have you called around to local upholstery shops to see what they'd want? When the proper foams/covers were in the $600 range a friend in my local club was able to get a shop to do foams/covers for $250. Just make sure the seat bottom is a high density foam or you'll be sitting on the floor.
Cheers,
Jim
