QuestionJust bought a 1969 TR6 and the engines been sitting up for 3 years so I'm rebuilding carbs, etc ... I also wanted to set the valves before I try to crank the engine. Do you have any DIY instructions for this procedure? Thanks
Answer
There are better sources documented than I could adequately explain here. I've included links.
-The basic premise is consistently rotate the engine in the normal rotation and keep the cam chain under tension (don't roll the crank backwards)
-At one point, when one valve is fully compressed, another "sister" valve is full released.
-That "fully released" valve is the one you want to adjust.
-In 4 cylinder engines, it is the rule of nines.
-Rule of nines is: 9 - (# of the valve fully compressed) = the # of the valve to adjust
-Therefore, when #5 is fully compressed, #4 is to be adjusted.
-Adjusting is done will a precision metal shim of the desired clearance
-It can be done with a combination wrench and a screwdriver, but there are also special tools if you look around (see below)
-Loosen to enough clearance so there is an almost imperceptable drag on the shim when inserted/ removed from the clearance
-I usually go around 3 times adjusting to make sure I get a consistent "drag" on the shim
