QuestionQUESTION: Hi Jim, Can you tell me what I should look for My ignition light stay red all the time in my 72 spitfire 4. I just did a complete tune up and the light is still on. check alternator and test good.. confused any ideas.
Also my temperature gauge is staying on H most of the time I replace the sender washed the radiator out. I stuck a tempture gauge in the fins of it at its hottest it was 145F. So do you think i should look at a new gauge or is there any else I could look at??
ANSWER: Mark,
What is the voltage at the battery with the engine off, and with the engine running? The ignition light shouldn't be illuminated if the running voltage is up over approximately 12.5v. What is always possible is that a prior owner crossed a wire or two.
As to the temp gauge, there is also a voltage stabilizer unit bolted to the back of the Speedometer. This supplies the fuel gauge and temperature gauge with a reduced constant voltage. If the stabilizer is bad that can also contribute to bad readings.
Cheers,
Jim

QUESTION: Thanks Jim My fuel gauge is not accurate either sounds like the problem. What do they call this part? Do you have to buy a new speedometer? thanks Mark
AnswerThe part you're looking for is a "Voltage Stabilizer".
At Rimmer Bros (www.rimmerbros.co.uk) it's
Part Number 148876A
Description VOLTAGE STABILIZER
Moss Motors (www.mossmotors.com) carries it as
Part Number 131-555
There are other vendors who also carry this part, these are just 2 possibilities.
Cheers,
Jim
