Triumph Repair: rear pivot arm spacing, pivot arm, rear wheels
QuestionI am trying to restore a 1977 spitfire. I did not take the tub from the chassis so I did not remove the rear pivot arms. When rebuilding I do not know how many shims are required to go between the pivot arms and the tub. Should they be same both sides, and how do i set it up? The manual I have does not mention how to rebuild this. Thanks for your help
AnswerRichard,
Those shims are used to correct set/correct the toe on the rear wheels. As the cars all varied a bit as built there isn't a "factory" setting.
If you kept track of what was installed and the car was handling normally then setting them back the same way may suffice.
Otherwise you'll need to do a 4 wheel alignmment on the car. If you haven't done it before you may be better off seeking professional assistance.
Cheers,
Jim
