UK Car Repair: ROVER 400, rover 400, electrical connection

WHEN DRIVING MY CAR EVERY NOW AND THEN IT WILL SURGE FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS AND LOSE POWER

I do not know this car at all but the symptoms are common.  Clearly the car is almost shutting down then restarting, it could easily be a fuel problem or a bad electrical connection. On an older car a wire loose at the distributor or on a modern car a bad connection at a module plug or earth!
