How do I replace the backup light bulbs on my 2003 New Beetle?

 Via the trunk.  Inside there is a plastic cover on each side; remove it (or both).  Behind the cover, unscrew the plastic holddown nut, then remove the entire light housing inward.  Give the appropriate bulb holder a half twist counter-clockwise and pull from the housing.
