Volkswagen Repair: 2004 Beetle, volkswagen recall, brake light switch

My 2004 Beetle will start but it won't come out of park no matter how hard I push on the break.  My gas light is on, could that be the issue or do you think it is something else?

  This is caused by a factory defective brake light switch, which is under a safety recall, so you should be able to get this fixed for free by the dealer.  See the article here, specifically paragraph 5:
