Volkswagen Repair: errorcodes, rotten egg smell, error codes

Hey rocky, when running a check on my car I'm coming up with the error codes 300b random misfire, 301b cyl 1 miss, 302 cyl 2 miss, 304 cyl 4 miss, and finally 171b system to lean.  The funny thing is after they reset the computer the car runs horrible for about 5 minutes it knocks and sputters, then it seems to clear up when the check engine light comes back on and runs fine.  I drive a 2001 jetta with a 1.8, with 84,000 miles on it.  I checked the exhaust and there isn't a smell of burnt oil or the rotten egg smell you mentioned in another post.

Hey Justin;
Most misfire codes we deal with on 1.8T Jettas are the result of failed coils.  Has anyone ever inspected your car as a candidate for an "overlay harness?"  Or, for that matter has anyone ever really inspected the coils, and coil wiring?  I would recommend this first, in your case.
