Question -
just bought a project 85 cabriolet. previous owner did not drive for two years. i siphoned the fuel from the sending unit access. sending unit was covered with varnish, fuel was dark dark brown & contained rust. tank bottom is also loaded with loose rust. should or can the tank be repaired, is it even a problem, have you ever removed a tank? removal looks difficult because the tank sits on (or is above)the rear axle beam.
Answer -
It is a problem-rust that is-chuck the tank. Gas tanks are normally fastened to the body with metal straps(2). Make sure to remove the filler neck first. Gas is a dark brown is a real problem in that some crappy fuel was in there and also water. Get another from auto wrecker
AnswerI personally haven't done it, I was just makeing a comparison with any other sane car. The only way I can help you here is suggest you either grab a book from the library and take a quick gander thru it (same can be done in a book store) or phone a local salvage yard and ask them as they would know wouldn't they? or I can direct you to another web site where you can ask the same question as the site consists of vw owners and mechanics - maybe someone there has done it
site is www.vwvortex.com I am the only vw guy on this site and well, I can't have done everything on every model. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. LOL
