QuestionQUESTION: I have a Volvo S80 2001 model. When I do not use the car for a day for sure
the following day the engine will not start specially if the tachometer needle
jumps up & down and a message will appear saying EL power system service
required. But once the engine run and if I use the car the whole day the hard
starting trouble is gone. It seems that the engine wants that I run it often as
possible. I brought my car to the volvo dealership here in the Philippines & at
first they told me that I need to change the starter & solenoid then a day after
they told me that I need to change the electronic control module. I told them
that once the car has been used for the day for sure it will start smoothly so I
said I think the starter and solenoid is not busted. also if the ECM is not
functioning , the engine won't run anymore. I talked with the volvo service
manager & I said I was not happy with their recommendations. Can you
please help me?
ANSWER: Fransico, What normally is the problem on these is the Voltage regulator on the alternator. There is a service bulletin on it. It drains the battery even if the car is sitting. you can read the number on the regulator. If its a 229 regulator, then it needs to be replaced. Tell the dealer about this bulletin. Roger

QUESTION: Roger, I'm from the Philippines and I asked the dealer here and they told me
that they do not have a service bulletin regarding this matter. I brought the
car to the dealer and they scanned the system. Is it okay is I send to you the
computer copy of what they found? I have been using the car everyday and it
starts and run well. Today, I did not use it for more than 12 hour and when I
turn on the ignition switch the tachometer needle went to 800rpm, EL power
system service message appeared again and it took me 2 tries before it
started. It did not run smooth before it run. Thank you, Francisco
AnswerFrancisco, A scan of the system isnt going to do anything in this case. Its just knowledge of these cars. It may also be a simple battery problem but in my experience, I have seen the Voltage regulators with the 229 numbers being the problem. Is there any other Volvo Shops around you? Roger
