QuestionRoger,
Thank you for your prompt answer.
Actually, I didn't rule out the brakes. The thing which puzzles me and my garage is the fact that the noise stops if EITHER the brakes or the steering is touched. I could understand it if it were only one or the other, but I cannot work out a common thing between brakes and steering. I can't even work out what would cause a moan rather than a screech, grinding or rattle. The garage thought that they had solved it when they found a worn ball joint, but the moan is still there after it was replaced.
Thanks again,
Les.

-----Question-----
My 1990 Volvo 940 2.3 litre automatic has 148000 miles on the clock.
Recently it has developed a problem which my garage cannot trace.
After about 6 miles, runing in a sraight line at about 30 mph, a moaning sound comes from the front end. When I say moaning, it sounds like a Tom and Gerry ghost! It is not a screech or a whine. When I turn the steering wheel slightly, in either direction, or if I touch the brakes slightly, it stops. It restarts again after a few hundred yards. It may go away, and the condition, however, is intermittent.
I would greatly appreciate your comments. Thank you.
Les.

Les, better get a priest to perform an excorcism. HAHA. Anyway, this is one of those that I would have to heard to get an Idea of what it could be. I was going to suggest the brakes but you ruled that out. It may be a possible power steering issue but like I said, I cant be sure without me hearing the noise. Have the shop keep trying. Roger
AnswerLes, the only thing that I have found out in the past is the worse thing that moans about anything is an ex-wife. Anyway, brakes are usually things that moan. I have also seen wheel bearings moan sometimes. It is a crazy thing but it does happen. Good luck. Roger
