Volvo Repair: idle, stabilizer unit, vacuum leak

no mechanical skills.....200,000 miles

my car always dies...when it is idling or if i have to slam on the brakes while
driving less than 20 miles an hour....i have a feeling it can be easily
fixed...what's going on....turbo wagon 1982

Hi David,
         I'll list a few reasons that may effect the idle of your 1982 Turbo..
          A small vacuum leak...a small hose has split or is broken off..
           There is a idle adjustment and a idle stabilizer unit that should be looked at.....you will need a competant mechanic to trace down the problem...or you may pay for parts and service that don't help...this happens too often.
