Volvo Repair: check engine light is on, volvo family, flame trap

we have a 1991 240.  just got the car.The check engine light just came on, what do we look for?  We don't have a owner's manual.

Hello Rishard,  Firat thing ya gotta do is get the Owners manual,2nd,get the Bently  240 service book You'll be glad you did!!The most common cause is a vacuum leak of some sort.The small hose that come from the firewall to the little metal 'elbow', splits and 'leaks' vacuum.The other hose is the 'PCV' or 'Flame trap'It can get clogged up and result in too much exhaust gas in thre crankshaft case and that will set the lite on.Since you are maybe new to the Volvo family,find other volvo drivers to recomend service folks,we're a friendly bunch and are glad to help .Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
