Volvo Repair: Check Stop Lamp, volvo v70 cross country, v70 cross country

I have a 2002 Volvo V70 Cross Country and when I step on the brakes a message appears that says "Check Stop Lamp".  My upper Back set of brake lights do not appear to be coming on.  My turn signals are working correctly.  Is there a way to get to the bulbs to make sure they are not just loose?  Or does this message mean there is some other problem?

it sounds like there is a bulb or bulbs burnt out.the top bulbs are accessed through the speaker cover and the bottom bulbs are accessed through the lower side panels on each side that have a small handle on them.behind this cover will be a small black piece that just pulls out to access the bulbs. some of the bulbs are hard to get to.
