Volvo Repair: Caution lights on 1991 Volvo 240, head gasket problem, coolant water
QuestionMy daughter called last night stating that "the caution lights came on (on the 240 GL) as I was driving. They all came on but were very dim. I don't think there's a problem as the car still runs fine."
I think she's referring to the ABS, service, bulb-out, and whatever other lights there are. What may be causing this and, more importantly, is the car safe to drive or should it be towed home?
A second -- and maybe related -- question: the vehicle has been "consuming" coolant for the past several months. It does not appear to be leaking; there are no drips when the car's been parked overnight or idling (for up to 30 minutes) in the driveway. Yet, we put a quart or two of coolant/water in every 1000 miles. What's the best and the cheapest solution?
Thanks,
Terry
Answerthere has to be a leak somewhere either external or internal.I would have it pressure tested for leaks and if this is ok a compression and cylinder leak down test would need to be done to see if there is a head gasket problem.
the problem with the lights could be a bad alternator or regulator for the alternator that has worn brushes.it should be looked at to avoid possible breakdown due to possible battery going dead.it should be safe to drive.
