Chevrolet: 1957 conv steering column, shift linkage, automatic tranny
QuestionThis car is a v8 with a powerglide trans, stock column, but has a 605 ps box. Just bought it, so no history. The shifter does not lock in park and you can pull it all the way down to reverse, no detents. Is there any adjustment for this? not being able to lock the shift lever in park is scary. cant find much to look at. I have a 1955 shop manual but I believe the 57 is different, either way, the book does not go into fixing this problem. Thanks, Ted
AnswerHI Ted ;
It sounds as if there is something worn out, I think there is a adj. on the shift lever comming out of the tranny. If there is any worn out parts just a little bit it will or can cause a lot of trouble with it.As with a std. shift it will cause you to hang up or not go into gear or pop out and the same for your automatic tranny.I would look for any wear on the parts and get new ones, you can look for them at (jc whitney.com ) tell them I told you. I think you have worn out shift linkage ok.
also if you do a serch and put in (57 chevy shift linkage ), you will find a lot of places that have stuff for sale.
Roger- and good luck
