Chevrolet: Flywheel/starter, full size chevy, chevy starter
QuestionI have a 1957 chevy 2dr. sedan. I have installed a 350ci. 78block, 700r4 tranny w/stock conv. out of a 92 chevy p/u. The starter on the engine is a ministarter(powermaster/168teeth). Initial installation, you could tell the starter needed shimming. As a result of many shim combinations,
the final result is the starter nose case was sheered off, which has been repaired. I also used a full size chevy starter and same results with shims as well as without. I believe the problem has to be the wrong flywheel? The combination engine (78)and tranny(92), what is the chevy part # that would mate both items. Is there another issue I need to examine or have I overlooked something. If you could, would you put your solution in laymen terms. Thank you very much for the service.
AnswerI don't have any part numbers to give you and I dont mix and match car parts. I am a General Motors technician that diagnoses and repairs cars and trucks. I also try to help people out on this web site in my spare time. I really dont have any good answer for you other than to try an aftermarket starter from a performance parts store like Summit Racing. I now that they have a web site but I'm not sure of the address. You can get a starter that does not have a nose cone on it and you can shim it all different ways.
I hope this helps you out.
Good luck
