GM-GMC: Third Brake Light, gmc jimmy, lamp assembly

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy.  The third brake light is very dim - barely visible in daylight.  All other lights are working properly.  Any idea what could be the problem?  I wouldn't think the light is burnt out because it is illuminating albeit slightly.

I have NO idea of what you mean where you stated: "I wouldn't think the light is burnt out because it is illuminating albeit slightly.

If the bulb was burnt OUT the light would NOT work at all.

Your problem is most likely a corroded ground wire within the lamp assembly and or a corroded bulb socket within the lamp assembly.
