Honda: Odometer/Speedometer, Honda, accord

Hello,
I have a 1995 Honda Accord LX 4cyl. and my speedometer and mileage is not working.  The instrument does not show how fast I am going and does not count for miles driven.  What can I check on my own before going to a shop for diagnostic check?  I was told that there is a hose that goes into the transmission and I've check that and it looks like its secured.  Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Do you have a check engine light coming on just as the speedometer stops working? If you do you most likely have a speed sensor issue. If you don't have a check engine light the speedometer head is the most probable failure. It is very common the the speedometer head to fail on these cars.
