Mazda 626 Trans Linkage?

Component Location:

The transaxle shift control cable attaches the selector lever with the transaxle transmission control valve.

Removal & Installation; Cable/Transmission End:

1. Raise, support the vehicle. For easier access, remove the splash guard.

2. Disconnect the shift shaft at the transmission end of the cable. Using a 12 mm wrench or socket, loosen and remove the adjusting nuts; pull away the shift rod connecting ball.

Cable/Selector Lever End:

1. At the selector level end of the cable, release the snap ring (if equipped) located on the cable housing near the bracket, and remove the control cable from the selector level by pushing forward and down.

Cable Installation:

1. To install, insert the cable outer into the mounting bracket at the transmission and attach the cable to the selector lever.

2. Lubricate the inner wire where it exits from the flexible casing.

3. Connect the inner wire to the transmission lever at the transmission.

4. Adjust the shift cable using the adjusting nuts as necessary to ensure proper shifting at all positions of the shift lever, tighten securely. Install splash guard.

Adjustment:

1. Loosen both locknuts on the shift cable mounting bracket.

2. Push the gearshift level into Neutral; align marks on the shift cable and the outer cover.

3. Tighten the 12 mm locknut on the transmission until the adjusting nut is snug against the bracket surface.

4. Road test the vehicle to verify proper shifting. If adjustment is needed, turn adjuster (counterclockwise shortens the cable, clockwise lengthens the cable) until proper function is achieved.

5. Tighten the upper bracket locknut against the bracket surface.
