Mercedes: Fuel smell, gasoline smell, tom graves

I have a 1973 Mercedes 450SL.  It runs great but I get a gasoline smell when I fill it up.  It seems to go away when the tank gets below half full.  Any ideas?

Tom,
You may have a leak in the emissions tubing on the filler neck, Or you may have a leaking gas cap. I would install a new gas cap and see if that helps.
You may want o place the vehicle on a lift and go over the bottom looking for wet fuel spots. Another possibility it a leaking sending unit gasket in the tank.
