Mercedes: my car doesnt idle, diesel injection, valve adjustment

i have a 1983 mercedes 300d turbo deisel. i just bought new fuel filters and a air filter. when i go to start the car sometimes it will turn over for 1 second then it dies, and other times it wont even turn over. do you know what else i could check or what the problem  could be?
