Mitsubishi: trans codes, transmissinon, TCU
Questionmy brother has a 2001 mits gallant. ever since he got it, it has not been running properly. the service engine soon light came on and the car goes into "limp" mode.. i put an otc scanner on it and it gave me the following OBD-II codes: p0765-shift solenoid D malfunction, p0760-shift solenoid C malfunction, p0755 shift solenoid B malfunction.... also it gave me the following OEM codes: 42-second not synchronized, 46-R not synchronized, 44-fourth not synchronized. what could cause these codes to come up and what can i do to correct this issue?
AnswerUnfortunately, with multiple codes like this and the vehicle running in its "safe mode" it is probably a sign of impending transmission failure. Sometimes an erratic TCU (Transmission Control Unit - Tranny Computer) can cause a misdiagnosis of these codes too. That is very rare. The electronics inside the TCU and the transmission sensors have improved significantly over the past models... I would lean towards a partial transmission failure. Definitely a mechanical problem. You could possibly take it to a transmission shop who could repair the transmission for about 1/2 the price of putting in a new one.
First thing is first though, make sure that the transmission has fluid in it. If the fluid drained out because of a hole in the pan... or gasket leaking... I have seen transmissions act up in this manner. If it is full and the fluid looks good... and isn't black/brown or foamy/bubbley you'll want to take it to a transmission specialist, as soon as possible, before complete transmission failure which will cost significantly more to replace rather than repair.
