Saab: Saab 9-5 3rd stop light failures, model saab, incandescent bulbs
QuestionQUESTION: I have a 2001 Saab 9-5 Aero. The High Mount Stop Light bulbs are constantly burning out. What can I do to correct this problem? I just replaced the whole assembly as the original was partially warped from heat and the plastic side tabs snapped off when I removed the cover. I put LED bulbs in hoping to avoid more warping from the heat of incandescent bulbs. 4 out of 5 blew in one day!

Althought I do not have direct experience with your model SAAB as noted in my profile, I can only surmise that you have an overvoltage condition. Have you checked the voltage when the car is running? [At the battery terminals]. No voltage should be greater than 16 volts;if so, the alternator regulator is defective and is putting out too much voltage. Can I assume that all other lights and functions are normal? If everything else is ok, then there has to be a voltage dropping resistor or similar device that is allowing too much voltage to the brake light only (this is just a guess).
Hope this helps,
Jerry

QUESTION: Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your prompt reply! Yes, all other lights and electrical functions are operating normally. I wonder where said voltage dropping resistor might live within the car? There is nothing in the stoplight assembly other than the 5 sockets for the W5W bulbs.
Thanks again!
Scott
