Saab: Saab900 Dash goes Crazy, competent mechanic, candidate problem
QuestionI have a Saab convertible 900 Turbo and when I drive the dash warning lights- all of them- go on- and the speedometer and other controls go to 0- the car runs fine- replaced the battery recently- I have been told that it will cost well over a thousand dollars just to look to see what type of electrical problem it is.....any suggestions?
AnswerRebecca:
The kind of response you got from a repair facility $1000 "just to look" is downright reprehensible! The most likely candidate problem area is a bad electrical connection somewhere OR a bad control computer module. You ought to be able to get a used module from a recycling yard fairly cheaply. (If you get me your model year I could advise more precisely). The older SAABS did not have instrument cluster control modules, just straight wiring...
Generally speaking, tho, my guess is that the most likely site is a bad connection at the instrument panel itself...no more than a 3-hour job.
Keep hunting for a reasonable, competent mechanic with SAAB experience...also, there is a website that will cost you $25/year to subscribe to...that provides the most complete info for any car..just select your year and model, and you will be "more knowledgeable than the mechanics"!! It is <alldatadiy.com> and well worth it.
Anyway, if you send me the model year of your SAAB, I can help a little more.
