Volkswagen: cali 74 automatic westfalia, carb, fuel injection
QuestionHello Ron,
My bus is having problems with it's fuel injection system..the flap inside the air flow meter gets jammed if I give it too much welly and a local mechanic has also identified a problem with the ecu..it thus stalls when I'm idling or going to slow in reverse (I've had to adjust the idle speed as a temporary measure to stop this happening so much) He's recommend replacing the whole set up with a carburetor system. Is this easy to do considering the accelerator linkage needs modifying too. Any advice/tips would be much appreciated.
Regards, Michael
AnswerHi Michael,
Thanks for your inquiry.
I can't personally recommend switching over the fuel injection system to a carb.
A) It decreases the value of the bus
B) The fuel injection system is very robust, and simple to fix.
If the flap is sticking, you may want to invest in a new air flow meter:

It is very rare that the ECU will cause a low idle/stall situation. Too low of an idle in reverse or while sitting is most likely a vacuum or timing problem. The most common cause of these vw's stalling at idle is a loose or mis-routed hose.
I hope this helps, and again, I would never encourage getting rid of the AFC fuel injection.
Thanks,
Ron
