Volkswagen: :(, screw driver, high pitch

Hello,
I drive a 78 VW super beetle convertible. whenever i turn the key it will start
but as soon as there is no pressure on the key it will die. i have looked in the
fuel filter and it looks like it is half way full. any ideas?

Lindsey,
 I believe the problem is the fuel pump switch within the air box.  To test:
- Turn the ignition ON (not START).
- Take off the air filter.
- Insert a 6-8" screw driver into the airbox to open the air flow flap.  You should feel it move freely.
- You should then hear the fuel pump come on (a high pitch whine) as the flap is opened.
- When you remove the screw driver it will go off.
