QuestionQUESTION: Hi there,
I am in a little wager with a friend of mine that no beetle modded (no Porsche) could beat his CRX B-16 w/ t3t4 turbo. I beg to differ, so I am on a mission to take a 71-73 super beetle (those years cause they have the biggest engine bay from what I have been reading) and mod a straight 4 to about 300 HP but spend less than $12,000. I am looking at only a straight 4 because turbos (from what I have read on forums) are easiest and less hassle to install on them. I guess what I am looking for is a good reference to manuals or sites to help me (a complete VW engine newbie) build a super beetle street legal that has a big can of whoop-a**.

QUESTION: Amazing sites. Thanks so much for the help. I do have one more question though. Looking at theses sites particularly VW Trends do you believe it possible to achieve a VW super beetle to 300 hp under $12k (not including body and eye candy zing) with a 2300+ cc engine w/ a turbo?
AnswerTony,
A complete turnkey high performance engine is about $4000-$5000.
See http://www.bergmannvw.net/
I think you could put together the turbo for around $2000-3000.
You'll need a good tranny, maybe $1000. See http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=265451
Check out this offer for turbo parts: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=507125
I do not represent or recommend these offers, just references for you to get some ideas.
