Volkswagen: front suspension vw passat 2002, control arm bushing, passat 2002

when ever i go over a pot hole or rough surface there is a really bad knocking from the front nearside as if you had no shocks any idears

Answer
I could be several things.  Bad/loose: strut, tie rod, control arm bushing, sway bar.  No way to tell without being there and looking closely under the car.  Sometimes it takes help from a couple of friends bouncing off the bumper to be able to reproduce the noise and isolate it.
