Volkswagen: car is shaking while driving, vw passat, warm thanks

I have a 1999 VW Passat with 98k miles, and recently when am driving at no particular speed the car beings to shake and just as it starts it stops. It does this every now and then till I get to my destination. Please what is wrong with it?

what engine is in your car? what kind of transmission?  Does this happen when it is raining outside?  Early morning, when car is cold, warm?
