Volkswagen: timing belt break, clean break, timing belt

the timing belt on my 99 passat broke while driving. the mechanic estimated apx $2000 to repair engine damage.  do you think this seems reasonable based on the damage that could have been done?

If the valves and cylinder head were damaged from the pistons hitting them, it is entirely possible.

If it was a clean break, where nothing was damaged except a broken belt, you should be looking at around
500-600 for the repair.
