Volkswagen: 95 VW Cabrio, vw cabrio, earth point

While driving car acted like it ran out of gas, but had a half tank.  Starter cranks, but doesn't even attempt to turn over.  Please let me know where to start.  Fuel Filter?

firstly, get a spark plug and pull an ignition lead off, then place spark plug in it. put it on a earth point (on a bare metal part of engine) and crank it over. (you should get a clean blue spark, if not replace the ingition amplifier / coil). if so, then try checking the fuses, and try replacing the fuel filter. ps, by not attempting to turn over, do you get a quick spinning noise, or a slow noies?
