Volkswagen: 86 jetta, shaft seal, input shaft
QuestionI just bought an 86 jetta with a 5 speed, it seems to be pretty good all around. Yesterday I noticed a puddle of oil under the motor, it smells like gear oil and seemed to be dripping from the silver cover plate (I assume is the gearbox)
How much of a job is it to change that seal in there?
Answerif it is the gearbox input shaft seal, then you need to remove the gearbox and replace the seal. it is a straight forward (but heavy) job. it will take an experienced mechanic using a ramp about 4 hours to do it. this is not a job i would advise doing on the floor. also, is it the seals around the drive shaft inner seals that are leaking?
