Volvo: 01 V70 Light Dimming Problems, dash clock, clock radio

I noticed that during the day my V70 won't brighten the lights on the dash (clock, radio, error message box).  I can't see them sometimes in the sun.  Today I watched as it went bright then dim during the day so I know I'm not going to crazy.  I park under a tree, so maybe a leaf is blocking the sun?  Where is the sensor that tells the car wheather it day or night?  Thanks for your help.

Look on the dash center, there is a sensor that flashes red with the alarm on. It also has a sensor for the ECC and that might also be for the dash. You might do some testing park in the light and use a blanket to cover different portions of the dash and see where the lights change.
