Volvo: engine wont run, volvo s80, electronic throttle

my wife has a 99 volvo s80.  when you start the car it idles fine but when you press the gas pedal it tries to die down and sometimes it quits. also on the right front of the car when it has been running and you park it you can smell gas. any help would be great.

There have been many problems with the ETM (electronic throttle module), yours could be one. You need to read the codes in the control unit see where they lead. That will require a scanner. A shop that works on Volvo or a dealer can read codes. Gas smell could mean a leak in fuel system that needs to be checked as soon as possible.
