Volvo: V70 1990, exhaust valves, synthetic oil

If I start this car cold and just move it a few feet then shut it off, it refuses to restart wothout several minutes of pumping the gas pedal and cranking.  It runs very roughly for a 15-30 seconds and then is fine.

Hello! That will happen if the car is not warmed up properly. The car must reach operating temperature before you shut it off. The intake and exhaust valves can get stuck in the guides causing a low compression condition. Sometimes, synthetic oil can keep this from happening.
