Volvo: Air condition turns on and off, climate control system, 2001 volvo s40

I have a 2001 Volvo S40, and ever since I bought it new the air conditioner occasionally goes through spells where it turns on and off sporadically, sometimes as quickly as in 2 second intervals.  It will do this a few times, and then stop, not to do it again until a few days later.  It is almost like I have a ghost passenger playing with the air conditioner dial.

What is the cause of this, and how can I stop it?  It is just more annoying than anything else.

Hello James! That is a tough one to diagnose this way. It could could be caused by a number of things. I would have a qualified Volvo technician check the climate control system for faults. A special tool will be needed that only a Volvo technician would have. Sorry I could not give you a more direct answer, but the system has many components that could be at fault.

P.S. Make sure the system i\has a full charge of refrigerant!
