Volvo: exhaust problem, gas milage, fuel pressure regulator

I recently found the exhaust of my 87 740GLE wagon become black and meanwhile the gas milage is also decreasing. What kind of problem does this suggest? What parts should I examine?

Hello John! The first thing I would check is fuel pressure. The fuel pressure regulator may be bad. There coul also be a problem with the oxygen sensor or MAF sensor. I hope this info helps. I'll be here if you need me!
