Question

After driving from Seattle to Boise the transmission adjacent to the passenger compartment seems hot.

I checked the fluid before leaving; it was a dark color on the very bottom but there was fluid up to and through the hot marks on the stick.  I was able to see through the fluid.

Do you think the hot feeling from the transmission in the passenger compartment indicates a problem.

That is quite a trip. The transmission has quite a few moving parts that will produce lots of heat over long trips if the fluid is breaking down and losing its lubricity. I would suggest a good fluid and filter change to take care of the issue. This will prevent any further issues from coming up as well
