4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: check engine light, service reminder, ford dealer

Question
I have a 96 Ford Explorer 5.0 AWD.  My check engine light appeared this morning.  I have not noticed anything different about how it runs.  There are no noises coming from the engine, if I goose the gas there is no stall or anything different.  There is no sputter or anything.  Wondering what you think.  Thanks for the help.
Do you think that I should take it to a local mechanic or not worry about it until there is something wrong?

I would not ignore my check engine light.  At least call your local Ford dealer and ask what causes it to light up.  Sometimes it is strictly miles traveled and is a service reminder.  Othertimes it shows a significant problem.. Please do not ignore it, you could have major problems.  Best of luck, Bud
