why or what would make the gas squirt out of the top of my carbureto
r instead of sucking it in?

Answer
Assuming that the cam is properly timed, and it doesn't miss or fail to run, I would say that a defective needle and seat or a bad float would be the cause

If when cranking, gas and air come out of the intake, and if there is no air pushed out of the tailpipe, but rather there is mild suction at the tailpipe, I would suspect the timing belt has jumped time.
